“Catching Sense”: Praise/Prayer House Traditions In The Gullah Geechee Community

July 31, 2019 @ 6:00 pm

$5 – $10

After new slave codes forbid the gathering of enslaved people off of plantations, some enslavers allowed the enslaved to worship on the plantation in groups.  This sometimes happened in the cabin of an elder or in a building that was used as a “praise house” where members could “hold prays.”  The Penn Center’s Director of History and Culture Victoria Smalls grew up on St. Helena Island which has a strong, praise house tradition.  Join her for a free talk on this important aspect of Gullah Geechee spiritual heritage.  Event takes place at the Penn Center in the York W. Bailey Museum.  Admission is $10 (adults) and $5 (students).
