15th Annual Sweetgrass Festival
July 13, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
FreeJoin us Saturday, July 13th for this free festival created by the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association to promote and bring attention to the Gullah Geechee people’s history and cultural expressions as exemplified by the sweetgrass basketmaking tradition: a West African cultural retention that continues to grow, innovate and evolve.
At the festival, you can meet local basketmakers who are helping to preserve this tradition while you start (or add to) your sweetgrass basket collection. We’ll be joined in our educational tent by the South Carolina Aquarium who will to help us better understand the environmental challenges facing our basketmakers who rely on natural materials. There will also be representatives from the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site who will share how community members can help shape their plans for telling the stories of the enslaved at nearby Snee’s Farm.
The festival is hosted by the Town of Mount Pleasant. Festival partners include the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, ABC4, Magic 107.3, and the African American Settlement Communities Commission
