Harvard University Teaching fellow Sunn m’Cheaux travels to St. Helena Island to give a talk on a unique, American cultural treasure: the Gullah language.  Gullah is a creole language spoken only on the Sea and Barrier Islands and adjacent coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.  The Gullah language began as a simplified form of communication among people who spoke different languages including European slave traders, slave owners and diverse, African ethnic groups. It’s vocabulary and grammatical roots come from European and African languages. Gullah Geechee language is the only distinctly African creole language in the United States and has influenced traditional Southern vocabulary and speech patterns.  Sunn m’Cheaux is from Charleston, SC and is a native Gullah speaker.  He teaches Gullah in the African Language Program at Harvard University.  Event takes place in the Frissell Community House at the historic Penn Center.
